Can’t be too hasty
These past few days, discussions about tapping nuclear energy as another solution to the power crisis experienced by some areas in Mindanao were pushed forth by its proponents. During the Mindanao Energy Summit last April 13, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Zamboanga del Sur passed a resolution expressing an intention to host a nuclear power plant. A week later, Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile was bold to say “Go nuke if needed be.”
Treasure Hunting
Last Saturday, I wrote about Mintal, the Little Tokyo in a Dream during the pre-war period. I must admit that learning of the things that had taken place in that area long ago are fascinating that it makes one want to dig deeper and learn of the many stories that are almost, if not all, gone.
During the course of my research, I was able to interview Mintal’s barangay captain, Ramon Bargamento. According to him, in the late 60’s to early 70’s, a good number of the remains of the area were still around. As a child, he and his friends would be playing in some of the ruins that were really beautiful.
Heartwarming
It was only out of sheer got-no-plan-on-January 2012-so-I’ll-go plus the fact that everything is for free that I agreed to join my family on a trip to Cebu for this year’s Sinulog Festival.
When we got there, my mother told us that we can go wherever we want go on three conditions. One, that we kiss the statue of Sto. Niño de Cebu. Second, we join the procession; and third, we go to the Sunday mass together at the cathedral.
Everyone in the family knows that when it comes to those things, we know better than mess up with our mother, so everybody complied.
A Call for Media Education
A few weeks ago, I was lucky to have attended a seminar on Media Education from Titus Brandsma Media Center. The forum had Fr. Toots Buenafe and Ms. Angela “Angie” Bladony-Ureta who are working for TV productions and independent films as resource persons.
Being a Mass Communication graduate, I realized that there are still so many things to learn about how the media works and how they influence our minds and our psyche. And the realization pinned further to question: How about the younger generations who take in every message conveyed by the media and are left, most of the time, to digest those messages on their own?
